1964 Ed Sullivan Stage Wall Signed By The Beatles

PLEASE NOTE: ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COSTS REQUIRED BEYOND SHIPPING CART QUOTE. Please contact Rockaway Records for details.

This is a piece of the stage backdrop that was used on February 9, 1964 for the Beatles historic debut appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. All four Beatles signed on the back of the wall and drew a caricature next to each autograph.

This 16" x 48" plastic piece of a moveable wall was signed just before the Beatles went onstage for their second set, at the request of a stagehand named Jerry Gort. At the end of the TV season, just before the wall was to be sent to the dump, this piece was cut out and sent to a handicapped Beatles fan named Lofton Sproles. In the mid-80s he sold it to Rodney Cary, the owner of the Southdowns Lounge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where the wall was displayed for several years. In 2002 Rodney sold it to a dealer who then sold it to a Los Angeles collector, for whom we are now selling it.

The wall is in very good condition. It has been professionally mounted in a shadow box display. The signatures were originally done with a black marking pen, but over the years they have turned to a brownish color. There are additional signatures on the side that have nothing to do with the Beatles or their appearance. One of them is by a member of the Liverpool group The Searchers who performed on the Ed Sullivan Show on April 5, 1964. The author of the inscription "THE BEATLES WERE HERE 2/9/64" is unknown.

Included are Letters of Authenticity from Frank Caiazzo, the world’s foremost Beatles signature expert, as well as one from Rockaway Records. Additionally, there are letters of provenance from Jerry Gort, the stagehand who asked the Beatles to sign the wall, and Bill Bohnert, the art director/set designer for The Ed Sullivan Show at the time.

The Beatles live American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show remains one the most significant cultural touchstones of the 20th Century. To own a significant artifact/prop signed on that monumental day - not only in Beatles history but in music history - is in fact owning a piece of music history.
